hmm, i've been thinking about culmets during their long distance relationship time a lot recently... i kind of wonder how much that experience would change in the future? especially seeing how they already have holographic skyping, which we're still quite a ways away from, but also we didn't see that in the discovery annual, where they seemed to be reduced to regular skyping (or space-ing? get it? ayy). also they probably barely got to see each other; maybe once or twice a year. which is... kinda sad tbh.
so... idk, just some headcanons here regarding that bc i feel like it:
- definitely a calling routine
- good night and good morning texts, trying to get as close to the others' current timezone as possible but more often than not sending the texts at completely wrong times for the recipient
- trying out each other's shampoo brand to feel closer to each other, then realising that no, wow, why does my boyfriend use awful shampoo?
- maybe they get a pair of these lamps that light up if the partner lamp is touched but since they're on different schedules that ends up being super annoying (also hugh gets woken up by literally everything and paul just really likes poking the lamp because hey, he's thinking of hugh!)
- they blow each other kisses on camera rather than smooching the screen bc a) less cleanup, and b) you can actually see the other person while kissing
- the first time they actually meet up in person, paul accidentally ends up packing one of hugh's shirts. he only realises it when he's back home, and then instead of washing the shirt he sleeps with it until it's lost all of hugh's smell. after that they make it a thing to occasionally send each other worn t-shirts
- paul also likes to spray the cologne hugh wears on his pillow but don't tell anyone bc he's a little embarrassed by it
- hugh usually stays up foreeeeeever to finish really profound love letters to paul which he then never sends bc he too is a little embarrassed
- paul absolutely jumps into hugh's arms at shuttleports or wherever they meet up, usually with enough force to make hugh stumble back
yeah that's all i can think about for now :3
